Rick Foris
"My current work deals with my fascination with ceramics as it fits into the historical perspective. I am interested in the way that pottery lives in a particular culture during any given era and the way pots relate to the architecture of that time. Iım excited not so much with architecture as a whole, but more with architectural fragments-those basic motifs that are present throughout history- stairs, gateways, openings in walls, monoliths-fragments whose meanings and functions have been unknown or forgotten. I try to incorporate the feelings these mysterious fragments evoke to create pieces that convey contemporary thoughts."

Rick Foris creates classically inspired vessels, containers of space enhanced by architectural embellishments and pedestals. His vessels are fired using the Raku technique. Raku, a Japanese word meaning " enjoyment of leisure, unburdened, contented" is associated historically with the Zen tea ceremony. Traditionally, Foris uses a white crackle glaze, though other glazes may be used. The pieces are fired to approximately 1750 degrees Fahrenheit and smoked heavily in sawdust.

Following the firing process, unglazed areas are enhanced with artistıs acrylic using a dry brush technique. Areas are masked off before more color is applied. When the mask is removed, the colors are revealed underneath. This intricate process of multiple layers of paint gives Foris' work their rich depth and uniqueness
